When our family first began homeschooling, we had the fortunate experience of already being in relationships with several other homeschool families in our town. This made finding resources, activities, and support quite easy. I remember that our first year was extremely busy and full, and I didn’t really feel a huge need for extra support or as if anything was missing.
However, the very next year, our lives changed drastically with a move out of state to a place where we knew no one, and so began several years of moves, new babies, and finding new friends, support groups, churches, and more all on my own. I honed my ‘homeschool research’ skills and was able to locate support groups, activities, and field trip locations for our family. But I didn’t, and still wouldn’t, call it “easy”. It was a lonely time in my life. But God used the experiences in that time to help me to grow closer to Him and to my family, so I understand now that it was a needed ‘season’ in my life.
As I researched, I also found support online through a virtual homeschool conference. This was a God-send for me! I was able to listen to veteran homeschool moms and dads talk about all sorts of issues in homeschooling, from finding your child’s specific ‘bent’ to organization, finding friends for yourself, letting God lead your homeschool, and more. Today that conference has a new owner, Felice Gerwitz, and has morphed into something slightly different and even more wonderful known as the Ultimate Homeschool Radio Network. Providing support to multitudes of homeschool families across our nation and around the world through blog posts and podcasts on all sorts of homeschool-related topics, the network is a place where I know I can find support, knowledge, and spiritually rich content and people on a daily basis.
*I am so thankful for that conference, for Felice’s dedication to encourage homeschool moms, and that she listened to God’s call to continue moving forward and start this network of homeschool families FOR homeschool families. Be sure to check it out. You will find much encouragement there.
Learn How to Homeschool Successfully When Life Happens
As I learned more about homeschooling through this online venue, I also became more knowledgeable about the different homeschooling methods, curriculum packages, homeschool companies, and homeschooling bloggers out there. These people are also passionate about providing support to homeschool moms and dads through their products and knowledge. I could relate to the need for support and encouragement, and I also found my own desire to encourage and equip parents was growing exponentially. Hence, the birth of this blog and the encouragement and recommended resources I try to provide to you here.
As I have continued to grow and learn both about homeschooling and about blogging, I have ‘met’ many people online who share my passions. When I was invited to take part in this book project, I was extremely excited about the opportunity to be published. I am a writer, after all. Even more compelling was the knowledge that the content of this book, given the names of the authors I knew would be contributing, would be stellar. These are veteran homeschool moms who love their children, love to encourage other mamas, and love God. I am honored to be counted among them, and I know that the words we have all shared in our book, Homeschool Successfully When Life Happens, will help to encourage you and to spur you on to find what homeschooling successfully means for you on any day when you encounter challenges.
